Narcoleptic Youth • Airplay (2009) Rate: Really! ^^^ Do what that says! Sometime back when I was in my mid to late twenties, this kid who was about 12 or 13 that was just getting into punk said he had this song he wanted me to listen to and tell him if I liked it or not. Remember those days? So he threw his tape in my deck, and queued up the song. As the song played, I wondered to myself: What band did I totally miss growing up, that this kid zerod in on? This shit is great! I told him I thought it was fucking great, and asked who it was. He told me it was a song called Barbi in Bondage, by a new band called Narcoleptic Youth. A NEW band? No fucking way - new to you maybe.... that shit is TOO good to be put out by any of these shitty bands calling themselves punk now-a-days.... (disclaimer: some good shit came out during this time, but FEW bands had this kind of sound) He insists the bands new, I doubt him, and our day continues until he splits... The next day, Im at the local punk store asking about this band called Narcoleptic Youth. They didnt have shit, nor had ever heard of them... New band my ass... Eventually the name Narcoleptic Youth and the song Barbi in Bondage slipped into the void that is my subconscious and became another memory.... Fast forward 10 years or so.... I go to the post office last week, and I have a package from Dr. Strange Records. Thats not unusual. For some reason the Doc likes me, and sends me his new shit to review. Its always good too! Its like hes in my fucking brain, and sending me shit I love all the time. I dont have enough spots in my CD changer for all the good music this man has sent me. Anyways, I digress.... So I grab the package and head back to my car... carefully opening the package, as some have come with flyers or photos or other paper materials.... I get the package open and pull out the CD..... Narcoleptic Youth? As I sit in my car in the parking lot, staring at the cover, my subconscious begins to awaken and says THIS IS IT!! I quickly flip the case over... Track 2: Barbi in Bondage!!! Holy Shit! I immediately eject every fucking CD in my car, and throw it in... skipping straight to Track 2 - Fuck it! I can listen to the rest later! 10 year old memories begin to fill my mind as I just sit in the parking lot at the Post Office in my car with the radio CRANKED!!! It was like a dream I didnt even know I had, coming true.... After listening to Barbi in Bondage, it finally hit me... I got 14 other tracks on this CD to listen to.... by this same band!!! So I run it back to track 1, and leave the post office. This entire CD is fucking great! These guys obviously grew up listening to oldschool punk. Ill just mention a few of my favorite songs as this reviews already getting out of control.... Is This Punk? - Clocking in at almost 4 minutes, this is one of the longest song on the CD... Im generally not one for songs much over 3 minutes long, but this songs tempo change midway makes it feel like two songs, until the asskicking comeback at thend, then youre like oh yeah, that was one song... It fucking works!. I constantly find myself singing this song to myself as Im doing yard work or other shit around the house... Double Jointed Circus Monkey - I have no fucking clue what this song is about - but its GREAT!! At a minute and a half its just my speed, and has a great chorus to shout along with when your windows are down and car stereo is pumping maximum wattage..... Elvis Lives in Norco - This is your quintessential West Coast 80s humor punk.... think Angry Samoans.... One more mention: McAnarchy - I have to mention this song, cause this song could easily replace any of the vast selection of songs we used to play when wed start a hotel room slam pit back in my teen years.... Quick, non-stop, and easy to trash cheap hotel furniture to.... Included on this album are an Adicts cover (Easy Way Out) and a Damned cover (Neat Neat Neat) along with a 20+ minute interview with Joey Bondage and Jay Sin.... Wrap-Up: This album is fucking awesome! I know Ive spent this entire review comparing this CD to 80s punk, but dont think if you pick this album up its going to be the same shit from the 80s regurgitated... these guys definitely have a unique style. You can feel some oldschool influences, like 7-Seconds, Angry Samoans, DK, Black Flag, etc.. but youll definitely be surprised at this sound, put out by a band from the 90s..... I really wish I could have been listening to these guys for the past 10 years, but Im still grateful that Dr. Strange has re-released this CD and put it back in my hands.... and fuck! at only $8, it should be in your hands too!! - CJ AKA Phudgee - WorldWidePunks.com SongsCopyleft © WorldWidePunks.com.
