Girl Scout Hand Grenade • They Want You Sedated so you never see the truth (2006)
Andrew sent me a copy of GSHGs They want you sedated... and asked me to review it for him. The only thing I knew about GSHG prior to getting the CD was they were a punk band with a female vocalist. So the day I retreived the CD from my PO Box, I opened it as I walked back to my car. I really dug the cover art. Immediatly I thought to myself, OK, so they are political punks... cool! As I got into my car, I ejected one of my CDs from my changer, and then popped in GSHG. Little did I know the havoc that would soon be unleashed upon me. When I think of female fronted punk bands, I think X-Ray Spex, Crass, Vice Squad, X, and the Frigidettes... I definitly was in for an unexpected surprise. So I pop the CD in, crank up the radio, and begin to pull out of the Post Office. Miasma begins, and I get a little head bobbin going on, then it kicks in!! Holy Shit! My first thought is, What the Fuck!?! Then immediatly I think, That drummer is fucking rocking out!. By now, unbeknownst to me (but not to the elderly couple in the car next to me at the light), Im totally into the music. I looked over and noticed their expressions, and had to force myself to calm down. GSHG has a style that is hard to categorize. My prefered style of music is early 80s hardcore, so this was a totally new experience for me. GSHG has created a new genre of music, and I call it GirlScoutCore. Its a Metal-Industrial-Grind-Hardcore blend. The blend is phenominal! And the female singer makes it kick that much more ass! I typically like to talk about my favorite song when I do a review, but goddamit! I cant pick a favorite song off this CD. Tracks 2, 3 and 4 are all kickass. The Consequence of Breathing (Track 2), opens with a cool guitar riff, and when the song really kicks in the fucking drums go off! The blend of different vocal styles in this song is amazing. When I first popped this CD in the car at the post office, when this song came on, I said This is going to be my favorite song on this CD, I know it!A Void Embrace' (Track 3) starts out with some trippy industrial sounding shit thats all mellow. The drums start to increase the anticipation, and you know theyre getting ready to just rip it, but they tease you, as just at the height of the tension you get a mere cymbal tap, and it goes back to the mellow trippy shit. Youre left like FUCK! I was totally ready to rock out.... Then here comes the drums again, building up the anticipation, and you know its just gonna be another tease, so your just marinating in the mellow shit, then BAM!!! The fucking song kicks in and totally makes you shit yourself. Again, the drums in this song are outfuckingstanding! (by the way, thats an actual word - look it up!) The lyrical mix, and musical mix in this song, once again stress the new GirlScoutCore genre. At this point I began to doubt that track 2 was going to be my favorite. Track 4, Lost in Poland, as does A Void Embrace, opens with some trippy shit, then just rips your fucking head off. This track is a great example of the tremendous blend that is GirlScoutCore. The additinal male vocals in this song are fantastic and give the song a total harcode feel, but at the same time the grind style is still right there with it. As this song played, all that I was, all that I knew, and all that I thought I knew left me. I was totally dumbfounded, as I pondered and pondered over what my favorite song on the CD was. I listened to this CD for a little over a month straight. I do not like to write a review after just a few listens. I like to totally know the songs... I like to be able to airdrum, or airguitar along with the song and actually be on beat before writing my reviews. I like to know the songs inside and out before passing judgment on them. I will however tell you, my initial reaction to the CD was Im not going to like this one bit... but that was based purely on what I think of as my taste in music, and what type of music I thought Miasma sounded like in the first 20 seconds. I will follow that up by telling you that I totally dig this CD! To wrap it up, keep in mind I am a fan of 80s hardcore, always have been. My musical likes, as far as punkrock goes is pretty targetted. So here are some things that make this CD kick ass: The drummer is awesome, the blend of the different styles, both musically and vocally really make this CD work. Did I mention I dig the drummer? Things that suck ass about this CD: ITS TOO FUCKING SHORT! MORE SONGS!! All in all, I am now a fan of the GirlScoutCore genre, and will be sure to be rocking out to these guys (and gal) for a long time to come. I have a 6 disc changer in my car, and it rarely had CDs changed out.... I listen to the same shit all the time. I have friends who will put in a CD, listen to one song, then swap it out, then listen to one song, then swap it out.. etc.. not me. I put good shit in my changer, and it stays... for a very long time... GSHG has replaced BGK in my disc changer, and is now officially CD 6. Get your hands on this fucking CD! It will totally rip your fucking face off. CJ aka Phudgee SongsCopyleft © WorldWidePunks.com. No Rights Reserved. |
